Default The Artist Buddy System Nolani project...anyone?

This thread is a compilation of Nolani Artists' art profiles. Here we list down our strengths/weaknesses for a more focused critique and feedback with our art.

We can also use these forms to see which artists you think could help you with certain problem areas.

If you want to take it another notch, you can pair up with another artist and try to improve together as a team.

Death By An Arrow

Art Medium: Pencil/Paper, Just Learning Digital Painting [little over 5 months :x]

Strengths" Pencil: Shape, Value, Form, Drawing from refrence [Primarily lifeless objects, animals, and nature]
Digital Painting: None. I honestly believe i have no strengths here because I have no idea what I'm doing and just sort of jump in blindly. ._.

Weaknesses: In General: People. I can not, for the life of me, draw people. It may be easier to generalize it to "Things with Concious Thought" as they dont have the be people. I'm just not good at portraying them. Poses, dynamics, anatomy, you name it. I'm also not good at conjuring art from my imagination.
Pencil: Sometimes getting enough contrast; I'm light handed so i tend focus on the lights and not the darks. Or i'll do too much of the darks and ruin the piece.
Digital Painting: Everything. I don't know what I'm doing ._. Painting of all types, or anything with colour, has always been my worst attribute. I don't know how to convert my sketch ideas into rendered art. I don't know how to make it clean, while at the same time not have lines. I also dont know how to make it "look/feel" painterly, as opposed to something that looks like paintbucketed.

Art Thread/DA Account : Guru oo dA

Eastern Magik
Art Medium: Digital painting.
Strengths: Female portraits.
Weaknesses: Perspective, landscapes, male characters.
Art Thread/DA Account : DA - guru thread

Art Thread/DA Account: Da , GWGuru

Perynne

Strengths: Umm... poses? female/male anatomy (sorta).
Weaknesses: Specialized shadows/highlights, backgrounds, textures
Art Thread/DA Account : guru / dA

Ravenhawk
Art Medium: Digital Drawing
Strengths: Faces (Male/Female), Coloring/Rendering (I guess? Not perfect yet though)
Weaknesses: Anatomy, Action/Dynamic poses, background/landscapes, Perspective

Tommy's

Strengths : Human anatomy, animals and happy thoughts.
Weaknesses : Color and depth.

Photomanipulation - blending images, matching colors, atmosphere
Graphic Design - logos, composition, eye for good typography
Weaknesses:
Drawing - Details, full-body anatomy, poses, male characters
Photomanipulation - cutting out tiny details, drawing/painting in shadows
Graphic Design - typography (I love it and I have an eye for good type, but actually producing it myself is more difficult)

I want a buddy! But seriously, sounds like you're rambling nonsense That is not ment in any bad way, its more of a compliment to our community as it is. Lets face it, when I ask for help, I get help from all sort of people. When someone else asks for help, he/she gets help from all sorts of people. So it would be a bad thing to 'sort of' limit it to one person.

Though I must admit, it would be good for the long term to have someone who is better at a specific part to give you advice on every single piece aswell as some theory behind it to understand it better. But I think that would go more towards the mentor idea

So in case the buddy system kicks off:
I'm looking for someone to teach me how to get better at picking colors, share some tips and tricks, like which parts of the human body are more reddish, or how light effects certain parts. By biggest weakness is that I have trouble putting characters into a background making them look like they are really there (so that the colors/lightning match).

I'm not gonna put up my strenghts here, because I would not be able to tell you what they are, but if you think you can learn something from me, I'm always willing to see if I can help you out. For those who use a chat program like MSN, feel free to pm me on the forum for my chat-address

lol Exactly! That's why this is just an open discussion thing and who knows what we end up with. And no, not taking that in a bad way at all.

I like the mentor idea too actually but yeah just not sure how many people are willing to mentor since most of us are kind of like in a learning stage at this point. But yeah, though I am always to willing to give out critiques, I always end up with an 'oh wow that looks great' type of reply. I am easy to please XD. But if there's someone I know who thinks that I can help them with a particular area, then I am more than likely to give them a more confident reply because that person trusts that I understand that aspect of his art better than him/her (If that makes any sense?)

Well maybe I can prepare a form to make this more organized if more people are actually interested.

If you're gonna ask me, one (or a few..not limited to these) of your strengths are painting backgrounds, animals and you got some pretty good understanding of anatomy.

I like the idea. I do agree with Tommy's that we already have a lot of great commenters and people who help out here, but perhaps pairing people up or at least letting others know of the things we want help with would improve the commenting too.

I'm willing to help out any way I can. I've done some art teaching before so I have some experience with it (mostly taught kids how to draw comics and manga though XD). I actually tend to understand technique and theory a lot better than what I can draw myself, so my comments tend to be more advanced than my skills.

My weaknesses are backgrounds, lighting, and textures of things. I'd love to learn to paint satin that looks like satin, and metal that looks like metal. Basically, anything that helps me with getting a more realistic painted result would help out a lot.
Also, doing speedpaints... I think I need a coach with a stopwatch or something who forces me to stop after a certain time, and forbids me to continue with just one more detail.

Yeah even if the pairing idea doesn't work out at least we get a list of things that people need help with and have others chime in with a more focused critique

Pairings (be it a peer type of thing or mentor type) are always welcome if something comes out from this thread. Just let me know if you find one and I'll list it on the first page. Like I said, there doesn't have to be a pairing coming off of this.

Here's a simple form that we can fill out. I already updated the first post. I still need to think about how to fill out mine. So many weaknesses and I am quite a bit uncertain of my strengths lol. If anyone can point some stuff to me about that, feel free =P

This is such a great idea, but I don't think I'd have the time to really devote to an art buddy right now I'd like to when RL calms down, but I don't know when that would be. I'd like to help out by giving better critiques on people's work for what you said here:

I seem to be terrible at critiquing art (because it all looks amazing to me) and I can never see what real artists seem to notice as something that needs to be fixed until it gets pointed out D: So, if I know what to look for ahead of time, maybe I can give better critiques to people

Interesting idea, Raven. Would be cool to see the results that could come from this. Dunno how much I'd be able to participate though.

Hm.... I actually don't know what my strengths are. I mean, I know what I like to draw, and what comes more effortlessly and what doesn't, but I can't think of any strengths besides character drawing and even that has occasional flaws.

Maybe I'm just being too hard on myself. :P

Neat idea! ^_^

Not sure how much time I'll have in the coming weeks and months (we're still so busy almost every day), but I'll sign up
Nice initiative, Mina

Since I do both 3D and digital drawing, I put both in the sign-up box.
Right now I'm focused a lot more on 3D than drawing.

Art Medium: Digital 3D Modeling and Digital Drawing

Digital Drawing: Detailing, anatomy, clothes.
Weaknesses: 3D: Vertices modeling, rigging, UV mapping.

So yeah, if its not evident enough. I'm stronger with pencil than I am with anytype of colour. Im good at monochromatic things, as well as the theory behind why things work and dont work. I just cant apply them at all.

Updated the first post. Added new forms and a more concise description of this thread

@Perynne - Yes you're being too hard on yourself lol.

@Death - Based from your profile, it seems to me that what you need to know mostly is the (Digital Drawing) tool itself and how to translate your knowledge into this new medium.

I am kind of reversed. I jumped into digital drawing with some basic knowledge of photoshop and had no idea on the basics of drawing lol.
